Yellow Crowned Night Heron

Fall 23'--2' x 2'--Pyrography & Watercolor

This is one of five pieces that I created as part of my Senior Illustration Thesis. I designed this project with the intent of bringing more awareness to the deterioration of our natural environment which is an inherent result of our treatment of the earth causing drastic climate change and natural disasters, in this case wildfires. By using Pyrography to create these pieces about wildlife impacted by wildfires, I have purposefully connected my medium to my themes. This beautiful bird is a native of Florida. The Yellow-crowned Night Heron experiences a variety of threats to their environments including heat waves, urbanization/deforestation, and wildfires. Each year, thousands of acres of wild land is destroyed by fires. 2023 was a particularly bad year for wildfires in Florida.
